The stunning setting of the Isle of Mull offers a truly unique place in which to live and work as the Associate Minister of ‘The Isle of Mull Parish Churches’. Your services to the four congregations and their surrounding communities will include the full range of ministerial responsibilities within a population of around two thousand people.

A unique opportunity

The Charge of ‘The Isle of Mull Parish Churches’ is situated in the stunningly beautiful north part of the Mull. Here, four congregations share a united outlook for ingathering and building up the people of God. Each one is committed to the diverse needs of its own parish. But they all share a keen and practical interest in the spiritual and social welfare of the people they serve. Situated 12 miles from each other, each of the Churches retains their own character set within the stunning natural setting.

Torosay and Kinlochspelve Church (Craignure)

Torosay Church was founded in 1783. It’s located in the village of Craignure, serving the local community, as well as those from the neighbouring village of Lochdon. Though small, a number of new homes are being built which will provide opportunity for outreach and growth. Local amenities include a village hall, golf course (nine holes), swimming pool and Progressive Care Health Centre for the whole island. There’s also a general store with post office and a garage. The primary school has a small number of pupils, which is reflected in the very low numbers that attend the Sunday School. The congregation itself has 24 members.

Salen and Ulva Church (Salen)

Celebrating its centenary in 1997, the Salen and Ulva Church has recently undergone extensive reconstruction, and a work is about to begin on a new extension. This will add a vestry, two large meeting rooms, kitchen with catering facilities and toilets with disabled access. The Church itself is in the geographical centre of the four parishes and is also the location of the newly built Manse.

A Church newsletter is distributed to every home in the village and the surrounding areas, and a number of activities take place at the church through the month to serve the congregation of 41 and the wider community. These include a fund-raising coffee morning every Tuesday and regular Ceilidhs.

The village itself has the usual shopping amenities including post office and grocers along with a local playgroup and primary school. Recently, the Sunday School has been moved to Thursday afternoon and is held at the school. We are also developing a programme for work with teenagers.

Kilninian and Kilmore Church (Dervaig)

This renowned Round Tower Church is near the centre of the village of Dervaig. Shortly before celebrating its Centenary in 2005, the church underwent a major interior and exterior renovation. Like its partner churches, Kilninian and Kilmore covers a wide area, taking in the famous ‘white sands of Calgary’ along with coastal views to Staffa and the Treshnish Isles. Its own website can be found at www.kilmore.org.uk

The village of Dervaig is an increasingly thriving community, with the church itself serving a congregation of 33. As new housing is developed, an increase in the roll of the local primary school is expected. The community is served with a small independent general store and post office facilities. At the moment there are no weekly or monthly church activities, no youth work and no Sunday School. But it is hoped that with the arrival of the new associate minister, we will be able to develop these services.

Tobermory Church

Serving 77 members, Tobermory is the largest of the four congregations, based in a growing community of around a thousand people. At the moment there are no weekly or monthly Church activities, but we hope to develop some once the new associate minister is settled. And the Sunday School continues to grow.

Tobermory is the principal town on Mull and is a well-known tourist destination. The Main Street, adjacent to the harbour, has a good selection of shops and services. The main economy of Mull is built on fishing, farming, forestry and tourism. Other services in the village include a number of social activities, including art exhibitions, musical concerts and regular film screenings. There are also a number of sports facilities and a nine-hole golf course overlooking the harbour.
